Skills Audit Table

Today I am completing the skills audit table from 6.1 in the Media Studies for Cambridge International AS & A level book. My reasoning for completing this table is that I will use this for a reference as to what I need to improve on in this class, what I’m already good at, and what I need to learn. Later in the year I will return to this table and do it again. This will represent how much I have improved from today (2/18/26) till before we must submit our blogs.

Regarding the first row of skills called "I am good at this" I only chose two skills. This is because in class two of the things we heavily focused on were these two specific skills, writing for specific audiences/purposes and editing. I understand writing for specific audiences (e.g. teenagers) and writing for a specific purpose (e.g. to inform people of the technological takeover that is occurring). For the editing portion, I am the designated editor for the movie and we have worked on many mini projects with editing in class. For example, we completed a short promo video for a national park. The point of the promo video was that we understand parts of editing that we will end up using on our movie. First, I had to take a flash drive to upload clips onto our computer, then from there we would arrange video and sound based on how we wanted the order to be. Next, I added text on to some of the clips, which included promotional language, to help sell going to visit the national park. This entire process allowed, and the making of my movie, allowed me to completely master editing on adobe premiere pro.

For the second row of skills called "I can do this but need to improve" I put using a camera, recording sound, and producing social media. I chose camera for this row as I do have some experience from previous assignments done in class involving camera work and I even did some of the camera work for my movie, however I haven't learnt enough of the mechanics to camera work and how to master certain shots. Recording sound is something I have completed in the past, especially with the promo video, although for the midterm of the movie I attempted to use miniature microphones to better record sound, especially considering one of the locations was outside, but I had trouble figuring it out and had to resort to using the audio of our camera. I also have produced social media in the past and even assisted to market on instagram for my father's business "Modus Builders," although I haven't done it enough times to become really good at it.

Lastly, the third and final row of skills called "I need to acquire this skill" in which I put a total of two skills. For lighting, it is always something I have had trouble with. It is a part of media that requires great thinking and attention to detail. There have been past assignments I have completed on lighting but never fully grasped, and for the movie trying to get the correct lighting in a location like outdoors is very difficult. For using online applications to enhance the meaning of texts, it is more self-explanatory as I have simply never used an application which enhanced the meaning of texts.
