Final Cut Changes From The Midterm

Today I will be going through what changed from the final cut compared to the midterm. I will even mention small editing features I used for the final cut which I didn't for use for the midterm.

One of the main parts that we felt needed to be fixed was how long Eric the bird watcher was in the house. Originally, our movie had around 15 to 20 seconds where Eric was getting ready to go watching. Both my partner Lucca and I felt this took away from building the plot while Eric is bird watching. To fix this our final cut only includes around 5 seconds of Eric looking through his binoculars to check if they are good, grabbing his hat, and then leaving.

Something that greatly affected how good our movie could've been from our midterm was the pacing. In class we watched everyone's movies and then gave personal feedback to make the movie better. We received a lot of good feedback but the feedback we heard the most often was that we didn't have very good pacing of our movie and tension could've been built more. What I did to fix this was I added a glitching affect which shows the missing person every 10 to 20 seconds to foreshadow when Eric finds him while bird watching. This is where sound also came into play heavily as we used a gradual chaos sound throughout along with a different one near the end.

Going back to the glitching which was added, I even added when Eric spots the missing person in the forest a back and forth between seeing him and the glitching which shows that is what has been foreshadowed this entire time.

Also the pacing change relates back to where Eric was originally in the house for around 15 to 20 seconds. To change pacing and get to the tension quicker there was only around 5 seconds where Eric was in the house before he leaves to go bird watching.

Another change was the opening credits. Mainly Lucca spent a lot more time on making the opening credits way better than before. This was due to the realization from both of us that opening credits weren't just a simple push over thing of media, rather it was pivotal to movies and helps portray which genre is chosen.

The addition of "An Hour Later" black screen was also added to show Eric bird watching later in the day as it gets dark.

Lastly, a problem that my partner Lucca mentioned which I thought was a good point is that there wasn't a lot of screen time for our missing person: Ray Capulto. To fix this we added the glitching along with seeing him at the end through binoculars.
